In fact, when these ganglions are removed thoracoscopically, stable results may be achieved in the treatment for various ischaemic diseases of the upper limb or in the case of axillary and/or palmar hyperhydrosis. Also of interest are the anatomical relationships of the paravertebral sympathetic chain. The latter lies on the deep (or paravertebral) cervical fascia in a medial position in relation to the anterior tubercles of the transverse processes. Actually, it is the paravertebral fascia itself which splits and endows the sympathetic chain with a tenuous investing layer; at the cervical level, it is covered by the carotid artery, the internal jugular vein and the vagus nerve which constitute the neurovascular bundle of the neck and lastly by a muscular plane consisting basically in the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

For our part, we will refer to the classic description furnished by Testut, whose textbooks have served for the training of several generations of European anatomists. The Superficial Cervical Fascia The superficial cervical fascia, situated more or less at subcutaneous level, completely encircles and envelops the neck like a thin orthopaedic collar. On the median anterior raphe, it presents the cervical linea alba. From there, passing laterally, it encounters the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM); it splits to enclose the SCM and then recomposes itself at the level of the posterior border.

On the border between the anterior scalene and brachial plexus despite the close contiguity of the two (Fig. 5). The phrenic nerve, adhering in its upper part to the lateral surface of the muscle, then to its anterior surface and lastly to its medial border, before penetrating into the thorax, traverses it obliquely in a lateromedial downward direction. The anterior scalene muscle, moreover, is also in relation to the lateral belly of the omohyoid muscle which traverses it at various levels—the position of the muscle being extremely variable—before disappearing with its intermediate tendon beneath the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
